Web design for builders in Bolton
A referral-driven market where the website's real job is confirming what a neighbour already told someone — and proving you're not the other kind of builder.
The website comes after the recommendation, not before
Bolton building work moves on word of mouth more than most markets. Someone has an extension done, the neighbour admires it, a name gets passed over the fence. That chain is doing the selling, and no website replaces it.
What the website does is decide whether the chain holds. The neighbour searches your name that evening. If they find a proper site with finished jobs on it, a company number and a few reviews, the recommendation is confirmed and they ring you. If they find nothing, or a Facebook page last updated in 2022, doubt creeps in — and they quietly get two other quotes as well.
That reframes the whole job. You're not writing for a stranger who's never heard of you. You're writing for someone who's already half-sold and looking for permission to stop looking.
Search your own name and see what a customer sees
Do it in an incognito window, on your phone. Whatever comes up in the first screen is what every recommendation you receive gets tested against. For a lot of Bolton builders that's a Checkatrade stub, a Companies House listing and nothing else — which is a very thin result for a business someone is about to hand forty thousand pounds to.
Being visibly not a cowboy
Every customer has heard the stories, and in a town where doorstep operators work the older streets, the suspicion is close to the surface. The mistake is answering it with adjectives. "Trusted, reliable, professional" is exactly what the doorstep operator's leaflet says too.
Answer it with things that can be checked instead:
- Company number and insurance figures, written out, not implied.
- A real trading address, or at minimum the area you're based in.
- Named people with faces. Anonymity reads badly for a builder.
- Finished local jobs with dates and places. A Breightmet extension from last spring is worth ten stock photos.
- Reviews with dates on them, ideally on Google where they can't be edited.
- How you take payment. Staged, against completed work, never a large cash deposit up front. Saying so out loud is a genuine differentiator.
What Bolton customers are actually buying
The bread and butter here is rear extensions, loft conversions, kitchen and bathroom renovations, and replacing conservatories that were never warm enough to use. The housing stock — a lot of terraces and inter-war semis, plus post-war estates and newer development towards Horwich — shapes what's possible, and customers know it.
It's also a price-sensitive market. Not cheap, but careful. People want to know what things cost before they engage, and a builder who publishes indicative ranges gets better-qualified enquiries than one who makes everyone ask.
Each of those services wants its own page. "Loft conversion Bolton" and "house extension Bolton" are distinct searches from distinct customers, and one combined services page ranks for neither.
Getting found beyond the referrals
Once the site is doing its confirming job properly, the next layer is search. That means a Google Business Profile with recent project photos on it — free, and the fastest-moving thing available to you — then service and area pages built through local SEO.
Worth knowing: photos of finished work uploaded to your profile regularly do disproportionate work in this trade. Most builders upload three photos when they set it up and never return.
What it costs
Starter sites from £799, Growth sites from £1,899 if you want a page per service and per area. Fixed in writing before anything starts. Our guide to UK website costs breaks down what every bracket buys, and our web design page covers what's included in a build.
Questions from Bolton builders
All my work comes from recommendations. Why would I need a website?
Because of what happens straight after the recommendation. Someone tells their neighbour about you, and the neighbour searches your name that evening. If nothing comes up — or what comes up is a dormant Facebook page — the recommendation quietly loses its force. The website's job here isn't finding customers, it's not losing the ones you've already earned.
What actually separates me from the doorstep operators?
Things they can't produce: a company number, insurance details, a real address, named people, finished local jobs with dates, and reviews you didn't write. None of that requires a big budget. It just requires being specific where they have to stay vague.
Should I put prices on extension work?
Not fixed prices — too many variables and a wrong number loses jobs you'd have won. Indicative ranges work well though. 'Single-storey rear extensions in Bolton typically £35,000–£60,000' saves you a fortnight of quoting for people who had £15,000 in mind.
Is loft conversion work worth its own page?
Yes. Bolton has a lot of housing where a loft is the obvious way to add a bedroom without losing garden, and 'loft conversion Bolton' is searched by people who've already decided in principle. That won't rank as a bullet point under 'services'.
How much does a builder's website cost?
Ours start at £799 for a five-page Starter site and £1,899 for a Growth site with separate pages per service and per area. Fixed in writing before we start, and you own the domain, the code and the hosting from day one.
